Urgent Update:

Erection Fever Hits the Capital
NAYPYITAW, Myanmar (PNN)

Forget economic crisis, pig flu, bird flu and everything else…here in Naypyitaw its erection fever!
Another PNN exclusive: Interview with Than Shwe

PNN: So Than Shwe you really think you will finally have an erection in 2010, a long time coming nuh?

Than Shwe: Oh yes ….oh yes….I will have the biggest most successful erection in the history of the world…but please understand of course it will take some time to become mature.

PNN: …man you are 76 years old… it should be mature by now?

Than Shwe: Well I’ve only had two erections in the last 20 years and the last was…well, shall we say things went off a bit premature …but remember the erection wasn’t in my hands like it will be this time. I will keep a firm grip on it…an iron hand in a rubber glove!

PNN: Will you allow International Erection Observers?

Than Shwe: Well of course Barking Mad and Gumball--

PNN: Do you mean Ban Ki Moon and Gambari.?

Than Shwe: Yes, yes, that’s them… they are pleading to be allowed to watch. I am so popular I get emails offering help for my erection difficulties from all over the world every day. However I think the little woman, my wife, Kyiang Kyiang, has been waiting for this day a long time. She is a keen observer of erections so the honor should go to her. We don’t need any foreign help with this.

PNN: We heard you asked that people “refrain from smear campaigns and avoid personal attacks”. Anything in particular concerning you?

Than Shwe: Well when I was a young lad at school I was involved in an erection that got out of control. The teasing can be terrible you know if one’s erection isn’t yet well-formed. I want to avoid that.

PNN: And the “smear campaigns”?

Than Shwe: Well some idiot NGO was talking about running a PAP smear campaign for women…how is a man supposed to have a successful erection with those kind of smear campaigns going on! Women’s health can wait till I’ve had my big erection!

PNN: Speaking of women, we have heard that Lanna Action for Burma would like to play a part in holding your erection. How would you feel about that?

Than Shwe: I’m no prude…any group who wishes to carry out some mature party orgyanizing work…will have my blessing. But remember…a good erection is very hard and can be quite tricky to pull off!

PNN: Umm…yes thank you Than Shwe

Panties Power Campaign launch in Canada

Support the women of Burma

Strip the military regime’s power
Help fund relief efforts
Send your panties for peace!

Action Now!

LETTER from LAB to Campaign group in Canada

May 27th, 2008

We the women of Lanna Action for Burma, would like to express our sincere gratitude and our many thanks to the Fédération des femmes du Québec and the Rights & Democracy Student Network as well as to their numerous coalition partners for today’s launch of our “Panties for Peace” campaign in Québec and across Canada.

Since seizing power in 1962, the military regime has subjected the population of Burma to extreme brutalities. These intensified after the student-led pro-democracy uprising in 1988. In addition to crimes suffered by all, the regime practices systematic rape and other forms of sexual, physical and emotional violence against the women of Burma.

The current humanitarian crisis affecting the population of Burma today is a product of more than 20 years of gross neglect and human rights abuses. The new crisis began as a natural disaster but quickly became a man-made catastrophe.

Once again the horrible aftermath of Cyclone Nargis has exposed the corruption and tyranny of Burma’s military regime for all the world to see.

Once again we stand together full of sorrow and anger …

Once again we refuse to be helpless… powerless…silenced…
Your involvement in The Panties for Peace campaign is needed now more than ever: While the world dithers about “Responsibility to Protect,” also known as R2P… let the women of the world lead with R2PP, the “Right to Post Panties.” Our fury has grown and Burma’s military rulers are in a weakened state and thus vulnerable to the power that they attribute to our underpants. If this is the power they believe we have, then this is the power we will use against them.
You will be sending your panties as a clear message to the military junta and also sending donations directly to help the people of Burma affected by Cyclone Nargis. All donations will be sent to groups on the Thai Burma border who are working with victims of the humanitarian crisis inside Burma. We believe that at this time, it is the only way to ensure that assistance is provided both independently and directly to the people.
We women of Burma need the support of women around the world. Your commitment to endorse this important and therapeutic campaign on our behalf gives hope, courage and triumph to the women of Burma at the time when we need it most.
Again thank you to all of you for your help and solidarity.

Press Release

Contact: lannaactionforburma@gmail.com

1st February 2008

CHIANG MAI - Than Shwe is the supreme leader of the Burmese military regime who has been carrying out human rights abuses on the peoples of Burma for over two decades.

2nd February is Than Shwe’s birthday. Last birthday, February 2006, Than Shwe was awarded third place in the “World’s 10 Worst Dictators” list. This year Burma supporters around the world are gathering to make sure Than Shwe has an Unhappy Bad Day, rather than a Happy Birthday.

Every year, Than Shwe marks his birthday by giving alms to some monks. This year he may not find any monks who are willing to come for this farcical birthday ceremony. He believes that, even he has been a bad boy all his life, he can cheat fate by making merit and using “Yadayachay”. Yadayachay involves holding ceremonies that supposedly trick the gods into believing something has already come to pass. For example a fake funeral will be held to ward off death. The Generals of Burma try to use Yadayachay to avoid the consequences of their sins but the extent of their wrongdoings has eclipsed all the powers of any Yadayachay ceremony. Time has run out for Than Shwe.

A well respected fortune teller has foreseen that within 2008, “Than Shwe will face a threat to his wealth and personal security from a trusted person or a group.” Where will the betrayal of Than Shwe begin? A reliable military source says that Light Infantry Division 66 (LTD 66) is his most trusted Division.

“Although we know an end of Than Shwe’s power is so very close we still would like to mark this day. After all he deserves to have many bad-day wishes. For 50 million people in Burma, every day is a bad day because of the atrocities of successive military regimes. He has the power to change his fate, not just try and avoid it. We want him held responsible.” said Cynthia Hill, a member of Lanna Action for Burma.

Today, thousands of Burma supporters all over the world are holding events for Than Shwe and sending him unhappy bad-day wishes. A special unhappy bad-day song will be sung for him and there will also be an array of rituals all aimed at further weakening Than Shwe and promoting freedom for Burma. At a bad-day event for Than Shwe in Chiang Mai, Thailand people sang “Unhappy Bad Day” around a cake in the shape of a pair of panties that bore Than Shwe’s face. Sections of the cake were then fed to the dogs, while other pieces were taken home for use in further rituals.

Become a sister for a woman political prisoner in Burma!

Thousands of women of Burma dared to call for peace and and end to the violence in Burma for all.

Today at least 106 are political prisoners and many more are at risk every day. They are held in deplorable connditions and tortured as punishement for trying to improve the lives of the people of Burma.

If the Burmese military is sincere about change then the release of political prisoners, must be the first immediate clear step.

What can we do?

§ Become a sister for a woman political prisoner in Burma

§ Have your photo taken with your sister

§ Spread information about Burma

§ Organize or take part in an activity to send support to the women in Burma

§ Lobby our governments to take consistent firm and immediate action on Burma to stop all human rights abuses against women and all other peoples of Burma.

The 13th ASEAN meeting begins today, Sunday 18th November.

The 13th ASEAN meeting begins today, Sunday 18th November.

The theme is
''One ASEAN at the heart of dynamic Asia”

If our “one ASEAN” does not take action on Burma
what color will the heart of ASEAN be?

This week our government plans to sign our name to a charter alongside the bloody signature of the Burmese generals.

- swearing to strengthen democracy

- enhance good governance and the rule of law

- to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms”

The inclusion of the generals of Burma in this charter makes ASEAN a laughing stock and dishonors all the citizens of the member states, especially the citizens of Burma who are fighting so hard for their freedom. ASEAN has the power to make a difference.

Monks’ leader speaks out from hiding and pledges to continue protests in Burma

Excerpts from an article published in the Washington Post on November 4, 2007 by U Gambira, leader of the All-Burma Monks Alliance สหพันพระสงไนพม่า, which led nationwide protests in September. Wanted by Burma's military junta, he is living in hiding as he continues the monks' campaign.

In August, the Burmese people began to write a new chapter in their determination to find peace and freedom. Burmese monks peacefully protested to bring change to our long-suffering country. As we marched, hundreds of thousands of Burmese and our ethnic cousins joined us to demand that military rule finally give way to the people's desire for democracy.

Video and the Internet have allowed the world to witness the brutal response directed by Gen. Than Shwe, Burma's military leader. Than Shwe unleashed his soldiers and once again the streets in Rangoon and Mandalay ran red with the blood of innocent civilians.

Hundreds of our monks and nuns have been beaten and arrested. Many have been murdered. Thousands of clergy have disappeared. Our sacred monasteries have been looted and destroyed. As darkness falls each night, intelligence units try to round up political and religious leaders.

Military rule has brought Burma to collapse. Our economy is in ruins. We are an enslaved people.

At the United Nations, China and Russia continue to block the Security Council from facilitating a dialogue between democratic forces and the regime. Within our region, senior officials of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations have condemned the regime's actions but have done little else.

All efforts must focus on making UN Security Council members take the steps necessary to force the generals to come to terms with the people. This involves setting a timetable for the regime to release all political prisoners, including Aung San Suu Kyi and allow free assembly. The council should also seek a ban on all arms sales to the regime.

People ask whether I am disheartened and whether this latest spasm of democratic activism is over. The answer to both questions is no.

Since August I have watched a new generation of activists join to call for freedom. And I have watched as many in the police and military give so many of us quiet help. The primary tools wielded by Burma's senior generals, a climate of fear and the use of violence, are no longer working -- and with nothing to lose, we are no longer afraid.

On Wednesday (October 31, 2007), more than 200 monks staged a protest in Pakokku. Their spirit and determination are a warning to the regime and those that prop it up. Burma's Saffron Revolution is just beginning.

Now it is the generals who must fear the consequences of their actions. We adhere to nonviolence, but our spine is made of steel. There is no turning back. It matters little if my life or the lives of colleagues should be sacrificed on this journey. Others will fill our sandals, and more will join and follow.

Washington Post on November 4, 2007

The Burmese military regime's assault on Buddhism continues…..

The Burmese military regime's assault on Buddhism continues…..

• October 26 marked exactly one month after Burma's military regime opened fire on thousands of peaceful protestors, killing monks and civilians.

• During the past month the regime has raided monasteries and homes throughout Burma, arresting thousands of monks and civilians. Many have been tortured; the exact death toll is unknown.

• Monks have been fleeing for their lives to neighbouring countries.

• Monasteries remain closely guarded, and monks are restricted from doing their alms rounds in the mornings.

• The military regime stepped up security around temples on October 26, the end of Buddhist Lent, fearing people visiting temples would commemorate the crackdown. Hundreds of riot police armed with assault rifles and tear gas surrounded the temples. Worshippers entering the temples were searched and had to show their ID.

Clearly, the regime is now deeply afraid of Burma's monks and the repercussions of their assault on the country's most revered institution. We can only expect their oppression of the monks and the restrictions on religious activity to grow worse in the future.

To end this oppression and assault on Buddhism, we need concerted international pressure on the Burmese military regime now!

Every 5th light you turn on in Thailand - funds the military regime in Burma! Ask the government to cancel the Deal!

Switching on one of those lights cost a life in Burma!

On…off…on…off…on…off…on…off…on…off

Switching on one of those lights cost a life in Burma!

Twenty percent of all electricity in Thailand is generated from natural gas from Burma. One fifth of your electricity bill (or if you are a tourist, the hotel’s electricity bill) is supporting a regime which has beaten, relocated, killed and disappeared thousands of monks, nuns and other peaceful demonstrators in the last month. Not to mention the human rights abuses it has committed in the last twenty years against the ethnic populations of Burma.

The natural gas for which Thailand pays $2.8billion is the largest single contributor to the Burmese economy, and accounts for more than 40% of the country’s total exports for the year. The cash has allowed the generals to buy weapons from China, helicopters from India and order a nuclear test reactor from Russia. It is has also funded the building of Naypidaw, new fortress capital for the generals, far away from the discontent of civilians in Rangoon.

The pipeline which brings the natural gas to power stations in Thailand was built 10 years ago by Total, the French oil company, Unocal, the American oil company, which has since been absorbed by Chevron and PTT Exploration and Production, the Thai oil company.

PTT Exploration and Production released a press statement on September 26th 2007 to say that it was “closely monitoring the situation in Burma and would like to report that the production of natural gas is continuing at the normal rate. Yadana Project is producing about 650 million cubic feet of gas per day while Yetagun Project is producing 430. Exploration work at M9 Block is also progressing normally. In addition, PTTEP maintains procedures to respond to different situations…to ensure that PTTEP personnel work in a reasonably comfortable and safe environment.” Meanwhile on the same day in Burma, the military regime started its crackdown on the peaceful demonstrators. Thousands of monks and peaceful protestors had defied government orders to stay at home, and faced truck loads of troops surrounding monasteries and pagodas. Riot police charged the crowds, beating up monks and nuns. That night, the military forcefully entered the monks sleeping quarters, ransacked the monasteries and took the monks away. These midnight raids on monasteries and private homes continue today. In defiance of a UN Security council statement, the regime has announced that it will continue to arrest anyone they suspect. They have admitted to detaining at least 3,000 peaceful protesters. The usually busy monasteries are nearly empty and nobody knows where the monks and nuns are. PTTEP may be comfortable and safe, but no-one else in Burma is.

Write to Thai Energy Minister Piyasavati Amranand or to PTT Exploration and Production to call on Thailand to stop investing in Burma and to use their economic leverage to bring about political change in Burma.

Remember every fifth time you switch on a light in Thailand you are buying a bullet for the regime in Burma!

SPDC…Where are the monks .....

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14 October 2007: Activity @ Writer's Club @ 4pm on wards Sunday (Walking Street Market)

Joint us for the Freedom in Burma!

SPDC…Where are the monks…the nuns…the demonstrators…?

The people of Thailand are no strangers to bravery and loss. On this day 34 years ago, 14th October 1973, many brave Thai students and citizens also lost their lives in the struggle for democracy in Thailand.

In August and September 2007 we all saw hundreds of thousands of courageous people all over Burma ask the military regime of Burma to end the brutality and exploitation of their homeland…to free Burma.

In Burma September 26th 2007 the regime answered with bullets and batons.

All peoples of Burma countries of the world, including Thailand, spoke out against the violence and insisted that the regime in Burma release all political prisoners and begin sincere dialogue with the people’s chosen leaders. There can be no true dialogue without freedom. September 29th the UN sent a special envoy Mr Gumbari to carry the world’s message to the regime.

So October 14th what has been the real answer…

Since then the regime has treated the world like fools…playing charades ….while at the same thousands of monks were taken away on trucks to where??? The military have continued raiding homes and arresting anyone believed involved in the demonstrations. Monks and others arrested are telling the stories of torture and brutality. People are dying in custody…their bodies quickly cremated.
The regime says it has released thousands but who has seen this??? Yesterday three more pro-democracy leaders were arrested.

In the past 2 weeks despite their promise to the people of Burma and the world, the regime has not made any approach to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, other pro-democracy leaders; leaders of the ethnic groups or any one else to begin talks. Most leaders are easy for the regime to contact as they are still held in State institutions and prisons. If they are sincere…what are they waiting for?

The world is so concerned this weekend it has again sent Mr Gumbari to Burma to hold the regime to their promises.

Just because the screams in Burma have been muffled does not mean there is peace on Burma. As the silence inside Burma grows more ominous it’s our responsibility to keep speaking and to keep our own governments asking “SPDC where are the monks the nuns the demonstrators?” Keep demanding that SPDC free political prisoners and accept that the time has come for transition with grace, dignity and honor…rather than react with further violence, cowardice and dishonesty.

Action on October 2, 2007

On October 2nd 2007, the anniversary of the birthday of Mahatama Gandhi, we gathered in front of the Indian Consulate to call on India to stop investments in Burma…and to stop them now. Around one hundred of us, from the Lanna Action for Burma, shouted our demands while the Consular agreed to meet two representatives. Neighbours came out to see what was going on as the haunting voices of women singing for democracy in Burma, floated along the lanes. The Consular was unable to give any official reply to our demands, but informed us to send the press release directly to the Ambassador in Bangkok.

Press Release 2 October 2007

Consulate of India, Chiang Mai, Thailand

“It is tragic that the present government of India is investing in a military dictatorship that has faced world-wide condemnation for its human rights violations.”

On 2 October, the birthday of Mahatama Gandi who founded the principle of “Ahimsa” (non-violence), Lanna Action for Burma (LAB) demands the government of India to immediately stop oil and gas investment in Burma.

We are outraged at the signing of oil and gas investment deals that took place during the Burmese protests where monks and other citizens courageously challenged the military regime. The protests were fuelld by years of oppression and ignited by a doubling of fuel prices. On September 24-26 the Indian Union Cabinet Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr. Murli Deora, signed deals with Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) for deep-water gas exploration in Arakan State. Indian investment in gas will total US $150 million, including Export and Import Bank of India credit line of US $20 million.

Given Indian long-standing traditions of democracy and non-violence, it is tragic that the present government of India is investing in a military dictatorship that has faced world-wide condemnation for its human rights violations. The revenue from the oil and gas investments will further support the military regime in its brutal suppression of the hopes and aspirations of the people of Burma.

We urge the government of India to immediately stop all investments in Burma and support for the military junta. We demand the government of India to withdraw all investment in Burma. On the birthday of Mahatama Gandi, the father of the non-violence movement and India’s solid democratic foundation, we call on the Government of India to support the people of Burma to achieve democracy and freedom from military rule.

Lanna Action for Burma (LAB)
