We the women of Lanna Action for Burma, would like to express our sincere gratitude and our many thanks to the Fédération des femmes du Québec and the Rights & Democracy Student Network as well as to their numerous coalition partners for today’s launch of our “Panties for Peace” campaign in Québec and across Canada.

Since seizing power in 1962, the military regime has subjected the population of Burma to extreme brutalities. These intensified after the student-led pro-democracy uprising in 1988. In addition to crimes suffered by all, the regime practices systematic rape and other forms of sexual, physical and emotional violence against the women of Burma.

The current humanitarian crisis affecting the population of Burma today is a product of more than 20 years of gross neglect and human rights abuses. The new crisis began as a natural disaster but quickly became a man-made catastrophe.

Once again the horrible aftermath of Cyclone Nargis has exposed the corruption and tyranny of Burma’s military regime for all the world to see.

Once again we stand together full of sorrow and anger …

Once again we refuse to be helpless… powerless…silenced…
Your involvement in The Panties for Peace campaign is needed now more than ever: While the world dithers about “Responsibility to Protect,” also known as R2P… let the women of the world lead with R2PP, the “Right to Post Panties.” Our fury has grown and Burma’s military rulers are in a weakened state and thus vulnerable to the power that they attribute to our underpants. If this is the power they believe we have, then this is the power we will use against them.
You will be sending your panties as a clear message to the military junta and also sending donations directly to help the people of Burma affected by Cyclone Nargis. All donations will be sent to groups on the Thai Burma border who are working with victims of the humanitarian crisis inside Burma. We believe that at this time, it is the only way to ensure that assistance is provided both independently and directly to the people.
We women of Burma need the support of women around the world. Your commitment to endorse this important and therapeutic campaign on our behalf gives hope, courage and triumph to the women of Burma at the time when we need it most.

Thousands of women of Burma dared to call for peace and and end to the violence in Burma for all.

Today at least 106 are political prisoners and many more are at risk every day. They are held in deplorable connditions and tortured as punishement for trying to improve the lives of the people of Burma.

If the Burmese military is sincere about change then the release of political prisoners, must be the first immediate clear step.

This week our government plans to sign our name to a charter alongside the bloody signature of the Burmese generals.

- swearing to strengthen democracy

- enhance good governance and the rule of law

- to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms”

The inclusion of the generals of Burma in this charter makes ASEAN a laughing stock and dishonors all the citizens of the member states, especially the citizens of Burma who are fighting so hard for their freedom. ASEAN has the power to make a difference.

The Burmese junta get more than 50% of their money from Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia. For example Thailand pays the monk killing generals a monthly gas bill of 5,408 million baht. ASEAN sanctions will make a difference, Thailand sanctions will make a difference. Your action will make a difference.

Open letter to ASEAN Leaders at the 13th ASEAN SUMMIT 18th – 22nd November, Singapore

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been held under house arrest for twelve of the past eighteen years. Today, as the people of Burma and the international community, wait expectantly for democratic reforms in Burma, she is still kept prisoner in her house.

Following UN Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari’s mission to Burma, the military junta has appointed an officer, Mr Aung Kyi, to start dialogue with the opposition. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said in a statement read out by Gambari in Singapore that “In the interest of the nation, I stand ready to cooperate with the government in order to make this process of dialogue a success” She said that for meaningful dialogue she needed to consult not only her political party but also the ethnic peoples of Burma.

On Friday, the junta allowed her to meet with three senior members of her party, the National League for Democracy. This is the first time she has been allowed to meet with members of her party in the last three years. Afterwards she met again with the mediator, Mr Aung Kyi and she said that it is time for the “healing process” to start.

We call on ASEAN leaders to urge the Burmese regime to start the healing process by freeing Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners. Genuine dialogue is not possible while Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and many of the leaders of the opposition are held behind prison walls, including the moral opposition, the monks and nuns.

The UN has called on the military junta to “create the necessary conditions, for a genuine dialogue” with Aung San Suu Kyi. This month, Indonesia holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council. According to a recent news report Indonesia’s president, Mr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, has written a personal letter to Senior General Than Shwe urging the military government to immediately open dialogue with the opposition and to speed up the process of democratisation and to hold talks with Aung San Suu Kyi. We trust that Indonesia will continue this position both at the ASEAN Summit and within the UN Security Council.

ASEAN is 40 this year, the people of ASEAN want to celebrate its 40^th year, not turn away in shame.

We call on the leaders at the 13^th ASEAN Summit to demand that the SPDC immediately releases Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners.

นางออง ซาน ซู จี ถูกควบคุมตัวในบ้านพักภายในระยะเวลา 18 ปีที่ผ่านมา รวมเป็นเวลาทั้งหมด 12 ปี ขณะที่ทุกวันนี้ ประชาชนชาวพม่า และประชาชนในหลายๆประเทศ กำลังรอคอยอย่างมีความหวังว่า จะเกิดประชาธิปไตยในประเทศพม่า แต่นางออง ซาน ซู จี ก็ยังคงถูกคุมขังในบ้านของเธออีกต่อไป

ผลจากการดำเนินงานของนาย อิบบราฮิม แกมบารี,ทูตพิเศษขององค์การสหประชาชาติ เป็นผลให้ผู้นำทหารของพม่า ได้แต่งตั้งนายอ่อง จี เพื่อจะได้เจรจาพูดคุยกับฝ่ายค้าน นาย แกมบารี ได้อ่านข้อความของ นางออง ซาน ซู จี ในประเทศสิงคโปร์ มีใจความว่า "ในความสนใจต่อประเทศชาติ ดิฉันมีความพร้อมที่จะร่วมมือกับรัฐบาล เพื่อที่จะทำให้กระบวนการเจรจาประสบ ความสำเร็จ" เธอกล่ววว่า เพื่อที่จะให้การเจรจามีความหมายนั้น นอกจากจะปรึกษาสมาชิกพรรคของเธอแล้ว เธอยังต้องการปรึกษาชนกลุ่มน้อยในพม่าด้วย

รัฐบาลทหารพม่าอนุญาตให้เธอพบกับสมาชิกอาวุโสของพรรคสันนิบาตชาติเพื่อประชาธิปไตย (NLD) ซึ่งเป็นพรรคการเมือง ของเธอในวันศุกร์ที่ผ่านมา ถือว่านี่เป็นครั้งแรกในรอบ 3 ปี ที่เธอได้รับอนุญาต พบปะกับสมาชิกของพรรค หลังจากนี้ เธอได้พบกับนายอ่อง จี ที่เป็นตัวกลางในการเจรจา เธอได้กล่าวว่า มันถึงเวลาแล้วสำหรับการเริ่มต้นของกระบวนการเยียวยา (Healing Process)

Small 'Panty' Demonstration Held in Rangoon; Anti-junta Pamphlets

About 40 people held a brief "panty" protest in downtown Rangoon on Thursday, holding pictures of junta Snr-Gen Than Shwe’s covered by panties, according to an 88 Generation Students member.

The demonstration took place on Bo Aung Kyaw Street in the commercial district of the city, a witness said.

“When security forces arrived, the protesters had already gone,” he told The Irrawaddy.
Since late October, international activists have launched a "panties campaign" against the Burmese military government, playing off the superstition of leading generals who are said to fear being touched by women.

Sources in Rangoon said a new activist group called the Generation Wave has been distributing anti-junta pamphlets and posters in different areas of the city.

On Wednesday, anti-junta slogans appeared on walls in several neighborhoods, said a Rangoon resident.

The abbreviations, CNG (Change New Government) and FFF (Freedom From Fear) have been spray painted on walls.

According to one witness, “Protestors also wrote on walls that evil people who kill monks must die.”

Young people also distributed anti-junta pamphlets in Thamine in Mayangone Township in Rangoon. On Tuesday in Sanchaung Township in Rangoon, copies of state-run-newspapers were burned in protest, according to another source, who said there were also small protests on city trains when people shouted out that people who kill monks must die.

A member of the 88 Generation Students group told The Irrawaddy on Thursday that demonstrations may resume if the junta fails to resolve the current crisis.

Monks’ leader speaks out from hiding and pledges to continue protests in Burma แกนนำพระสงฆ์ ยืนยันจะสู้ต่อ ในพม่า

Excerpts from an article published in the Washington Post on November 4, 2007 by U Gambira, leader of the All-Burma Monks Alliance สหพันพระสงไนพม่า, which led nationwide protests in September. Wanted by Burma's military junta, he is living in hiding as he continues the monks' campaign.

In August, the Burmese people began to write a new chapter in their determination to find peace and freedom. Burmese monks peacefully protested to bring change to our long-suffering country. As we marched, hundreds of thousands of Burmese and our ethnic cousins joined us to demand that military rule finally give way to the people's desire for democracy.

Video and the Internet have allowed the world to witness the brutal response directed by Gen. Than Shwe, Burma's military leader. Than Shwe unleashed his soldiers and once again the streets in Rangoon and Mandalay ran red with the blood of innocent civilians.

Hundreds of our monks and nuns have been beaten and arrested. Many have been murdered. Thousands of clergy have disappeared. Our sacred monasteries have been looted and destroyed. As darkness falls each night, intelligence units try to round up political and religious leaders.

Military rule has brought Burma to collapse. Our economy is in ruins. We are an enslaved people.

At the United Nations, China and Russia continue to block the Security Council from facilitating a dialogue between democratic forces and the regime. Within our region, senior officials of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations have condemned the regime's actions but have done little else.

All efforts must focus on making UN Security Council members take the steps necessary to force the generals to come to terms with the people. This involves setting a timetable for the regime to release all political prisoners, including Aung San Suu Kyi and allow free assembly. The council should also seek a ban on all arms sales to the regime.

People ask whether I am disheartened and whether this latest spasm of democratic activism is over. The answer to both questions is no.

Since August I have watched a new generation of activists join to call for freedom. And I have watched as many in the police and military give so many of us quiet help. The primary tools wielded by Burma's senior generals, a climate of fear and the use of violence, are no longer working -- and with nothing to lose, we are no longer afraid.

On Wednesday (October 31, 2007), more than 200 monks staged a protest in Pakokku. Their spirit and determination are a warning to the regime and those that prop it up. Burma's Saffron Revolution is just beginning.

Now it is the generals who must fear the consequences of their actions. We adhere to nonviolence, but our spine is made of steel. There is no turning back. It matters little if my life or the lives of colleagues should be sacrificed on this journey. Others will fill our sandals, and more will join and follow.

เมื่อเดือนสิงหาคมที่ผ่านมา ประชาชนในพม่า เรื่อมเขียนประวัติศาสตร์หน้าใหม่ เรื่องพวกเค้า ตัดสินใจ ต่อสู้เพื่อสันติภาพ และเสรีภาพ พระสงฆ์ในพม่า ประท้วง อย่างสงบ สำรับนำไปสู่ การเปรี่ยนแปลง ที่คนในประเทศ ต้องทนทุกข์ทรมานมายาวนาน ตอนที่เรากำลังเดินขบวนกัน คนพม่า และ พี่น้องชาติพันธุ์ นับแสน มาเข้าร่วม เรียกร้อง ให้ทหารพม่า เปิดทางให้นำประเทศไปสู่ ประชาธิปไตย ที่ประชาชนต้องการ

ภาพวิดีโอและ อินเตอร์เนต ได้ให้โอกาส ประชาชนโลก เป็นพยาน การโต้ตอบที่โหดร้าย ของ ผู้นำทหารพม่า พลเอก ตานส่วย เขาปล่อยให้ทหาร กระทำโหดเหี้ยมต่อประชาชน ทำให้ถนนในเมือง ย่านกุ้ง และ มารตาเล ต้องนองเลือดของบุคคล บริสุทธิ์

พระสงฆ์ และแม่ชี นับร้อย ถูกทำร้ายร่างกายอย่างรุนแรงและ จับกุม อีกมากมายที่ถูกฆ่าตาย ผู้เกี่ยวข้องกับศาสนานับพัน สูญหาย วัด ซึ่งเป็นที่เราบูชาก็ ถูกเข้าค้นและ ทำร้าย ทุกๆค่ำมีะนักสืบของทหาร ไล่จับผู้นำการเมือง ผู้นำศาสนา

รัฐบาลทหารนำประเทศพม่าไปสู่ความล้มเหลว ทำให้เศรษกิจของเราพังพินาศ ทำให้เราถูกปิดกั้นจากโลกภายนอก

ประเทศจีน และรัชเซีย พยายามปิดกั้น เพื่อไม่ให้ คณะกรรมการความปลอดภัยสหประชาชาติ นำประเทศพม่าไปสู่การพูดคุยระหว่าง กลุ่มประชาธิปไตร และรัฐบาลทหาร ผู้นำอาเชี่ยนในภูมิภาคของเรา ได้วิจารณ์การกระทำของทหารอย่างรุนแรง

ความพยายามทุกๆผ่าย ต้องเน้น ให้สมาชิกของ คณะกรรมการความปลอดภัยสหประชาชาติ ต้องทำให้ นายพล พูดคุยตกลงกับประชาชน รวมถึงการปล่อยตัวนักโทษการเมือง และนางอ่องชานซูจี มีอิจสระในการรวมตัว ให้คณะกรรมการสั่งห้ามการค้าอาวุธให้ทหารพม่า
ผู้คนถามอัดตามาว่า ท้อแท้หมดกำลังใจ และการเคลื่อนไหวเพื่อประชาธิปไตรจบลงหรือไม่ คำตอบทั้งสองคำถาม คือ ไม่

ตั้งแต่เดือนสิงหาคม อัดตามา ได้เห็นว่า ยวชนเข้าร่วมในการต่อสู้เรียกร้องเสรีภาพ และได้เห็นตำตรวจ ทหารมากมมายที่ให้ความช่วยเหลือพวกเราบ้างเล็กน้อย การใช้ความรุนแรงเพื่อให้ผู้คนหวาดกลัว นั้นใช้ไม่ได้ผลอีกต่อไป และเราก็ไม่มีความหวาดกลัวอีกต่อไป ซึ่งเราไม่มีอะไรจะเสียอีก

เมื่อวันพุธ ที่ 31 ตุลาคม 2550 ที่ผ่านมา พระสงฆ์กว่า 200 รูป ได้ลูกขึ้นมาประท้วงอีกครั้ง ที่เมืองปะโคกกู่ ด้วยความตั้งใจแสดงให้ทหารรู้ว่า การปัฏิวัต ของผ้าเหลือง Burma's Saffron Revolution ได้เรื่อมขึ้น ในพม่า

เวลานี้ เป็นเวลาที่ทหารเค้าต้องหวาดกลัวกับผลกระทบจากการกระทำของเค้า เรายึดมั่นในการไม่ใช้ความรุนแรง มันเป็นแค่สิ่งเล็กน้อยในการสังเวยชีวิตของอัดตามาและพักพวกในการเดินทางครั้งนี้

The Burmese military regime's assault on Buddhism continues…..

• October 26 marked exactly one month after Burma's military regime opened fire on thousands of peaceful protestors, killing monks and civilians.

• During the past month the regime has raided monasteries and homes throughout Burma, arresting thousands of monks and civilians. Many have been tortured; the exact death toll is unknown.

• Monks have been fleeing for their lives to neighbouring countries.

• Monasteries remain closely guarded, and monks are restricted from doing their alms rounds in the mornings.

• The military regime stepped up security around temples on October 26, the end of Buddhist Lent, fearing people visiting temples would commemorate the crackdown. Hundreds of riot police armed with assault rifles and tear gas surrounded the temples. Worshippers entering the temples were searched and had to show their ID.

Clearly, the regime is now deeply afraid of Burma's monks and the repercussions of their assault on the country's most revered institution. We can only expect their oppression of the monks and the restrictions on religious activity to grow worse in the future.

To end this oppression and assault on Buddhism, we need concerted international pressure on the Burmese military regime now!

ทหารพม่ายังคงทำลายพระพุทธศาสนาอย่างต่อเนื่อง

เมื่อวันที่ 26 ตุลาคม 2550 เป็นวันครบรอบหนึ่งเดือน หลังจากที่เผด็จการทหารพม่ายิงพระและประชาชนที่ออกมาเดินขบวนประท้วงอย่างสันติ โดยมีการสังหารพระและประชาชนจำนวนมาก

นอกจากนี้ ทหารพม่ายังได้เข้าตรวจค้นตามวัดและบ้านต่างๆในพม่า โดยมีการจับกุมพระและชาวบ้านนับพัน หลายคนถูกทรมานร่างกายและสังหาร แต่ไม่ทราบจำนวนที่แน่นอน

พระมากมายหลายรูปต้องหลบหนีจากพม่า ไปยังประเทศเพื่อนบ้านต่างๆหลายประเทศ

ทั้งนี้ วัดต่างๆยังถูกทหารพม่าล้อมรอบ ส่วนพระถูกกักบริเวณและจำกัดความเคลื่อนไหว รวมถึงการไปตักบาตรในตอนเช้า

ในวันที่ 26 ตุลาคม 2550 ทหารพม่าได้ส่งกำลังเข้าไปตามวัดต่าง เนื่องจากเป็นวันออกพรรษาและเกรงว่าชาวบ้านที่จะเข้าไปทำบุญในวันออกพรรษาจะทำพิธีรำลึกพระที่มรณภาพจากการใช้กำลังเข้ากวาดล้างพระสงฆ์และประชาชนอย่างโหดเหี้ยม โดยได้นำตำรวจพร้อมอาวุธรบมือรวมทั้งแก๊สน้ำตาเข้าประจำในบริเวณวัดต่างๆ ผู้คนที่จะเข้าไปทำบุญถูกตรวจค้นและต้องแสดงบัตรประจำตัว ซึ่งเป็นที่ประจักษ์ว่า ทหารพม่ากลัวผลกระทบจากการกระทำอันโหดร้าย ต่อพระภิกษุและสถาบันพระพุทธศาสนา

พวกเราเห็นว่า การใช้ความรุนแรงปราบปราบพระและจำกัดเสรีภาพและกิจกรรมทางศาสนา มีแต่จะทำให้สถานการณ์ยิ่งเลวร้ายกว่าเดิมในอนาคต

พวกเราเรียกร้องให้นานาชาติออกมาประณามและกดดันทหารพม่า ให้ยุติการทำลายพระพุทธศาสนาในพม่า

เป็นวันครบรอบหนึ่งเดือนที่พระสงฆ์ออกมาชุมนุมอย่างสงบในพม่า ที่เชียงใหม่วันนี้กลุ่มล้านนาปฏิบัติการเพื่อพม่าจะจัดกิจกรรม ในเวลา 19.00 น ที่อนุสาวรีย์สามกษัตริย์เพื่อระลึกถึงเหตุการณ์

และเตือนความทรงจำว่าในพม่า ยังไม่มีสันติภาพ กรุณาใส่เสื้อสีแดง นำเทียนมาด้วย และทุกท่านที่อยุ่พื้นที่อื่นอื่นๆ สามารถที่จะทำกิจกรรม ในพื้นที่ของท่าน เพื่อแสดงความสมานฉันท์ กับพระสงฆ์ และประชาชนในพม่า ในการ เพื่อประชาธิปไตยและความยุติธรรมทางสังคม
